Although the legality of sporting betting is still a matter of debate, some states have started to allow it. In Iowa betting on sports is legal since the year 2019 (both online and retail). The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission oversees the business and is charged a licensing fee to the online operator. Betting on free8k in Michigan is legal on the internet as well as in retail casinos. The program was first introduced in three casinos in March 2020, just before the Coronavirus pandemic. Mississippi has also played around with betting on sports but has not yet adopted mobile wagering.

The repeal of PASPA has led to a surge of legislative and business momentum. Four major American sports leagues have partnered with operators of sports betting in recent years. Some have even created official sports betting channels. Nevada is a notable exception. Sports betting payouts have always been based on the results. PASPA has prohibited both in-person and online betting, except for Nevada. However, sports betting apps permit users to pay as well as register betting choices and act as digital clearinghouses to pay out or bet calls.
